A portmanteau of the words 'Automotive' and 'Aviation', the Autavia was the branding behind Heuer's line of stopwatches produced in the 1930s, before it was revived for the brand's first chronograph wristwatches with its own model name.
An icon for Heuer's firm partnership with Formula One racing, the Heuer Autavia was designed and marketed to withstand the trying conditions of extreme sports such as diving or aerobatics, with features such as the Incabloc shock protection system and screw-down case backs.
This particular version of the Heuer Autavia Ref. 7763, however, comes with a snap-on case back in a compressor case, increasing the watch's water resistance with an increase in depth and water pressure. Other than a tachymeter bezel, there are variants of the Ref. 7763 that are fitted with 12-hour bezels and hours/minutes bezels.
